The Bar Chart Club Conference is a two-day conference filled with

. This professional development event is designed for anyone who works with data and wants to create better, more effective visualizations. Whether you’re a seasoned data analyst or just beginning your visualization journey, you’ll leave with an expanded toolkit and a network of fellow chart makers across the central Midwest. 

Day one (March 24) features à la carte workshops

 where attendees can dive deep into specific tools, techniques, and methodologies through interactive, hands-on sessions tailored to their interests and skill levels. 

Day two (March 25) is the main conference event

, packed with compelling keynote presentations, targeted breakout sessions, expert panels, and ample networking opportunities designed to spark conversations and forge lasting professional relationships. We can’t wait to see you there.

Join data communication specialist, Erin Waldron, as she unpacks the most common blunders researchers make as we try to visualize our data in presentations, reports, and dashboards. These data visualization mistakes are predictable and pervasive, and they are likely undermining your own efforts to disseminate your research and amplify its impact. Over the course of this three hour workshop, you’ll learn how to take charts that are boring, confusing, or intimidating and transform them into engaging, intuitive visualizations that capture your audience’s attention. You’ll walk away with a step-by-step checklist to guide your next project, fully equipped to avoid the most common visualization potholes and ready to create a new path towards more meaningful data communication.

Workshop Day: AM Option 1

Cornerstone Tableau Workshop
9:00AM - 12:00PM, March 24th

**Workshop sessions are held on Tuesday, March 24th and are added for an additional cost. You may add one morning session and/or one afternoon session.**

During this session, attendees will learn from Ethan Lang how to connect to data, cover Tableau Desktop fundamentals, discuss the science behind why data visualization works, and practice making some of the most effective chart types in Tableau.

Workshop Day: AM Option 2

Cornerstone Power BI Workshop
1:00PM-4:00PM, March 24th

**Workshop sessions are held on Tuesday, March 24th and are added for an additional cost. You may add one morning session and/or one afternoon session.**

During this session, Matt Snively will introduce attendees to the foundational elements that make Power BI so useful. You’ll learn to load, structure, and transform data using Power Query Editor, discuss the science behind why data visualization works, and practice making some of the most effective chart types in Power BI Desktop.

Adding AI to your Dataviz Workflow

Data visualization is usually a combination of quantitative, qualitative, and visual components, and this confluence presents unique challenges and opportunities when it comes to using AI tools. During this workshop with Eva Sibinga, we’ll cut through the hype and build a grounded perspective on some of the varied roles that AI tools can play in a data visualization workflow, from prompt engineering to agentic workflows to one-off helper tools. AI tools can range from helpful partners and incredible timesavers to frustrating distractions and dangerous liabilities. You’ll leave feeling empowered to build a workflow that works for you and to critically assess AI tools in this always-evolving landscape.
