About Nola and Baldwin:

Nola Denny survived her father's tragic death and her mother's descent into mental illness by holding fast to Their Eyes Were Watching God. Inspired by Janie Crawford, Hurston's unforgettable heroine, Nola sets out to reclaim a voice long silenced by the burdens of caretaking and the weight of her past. Her journey to New York takes an unexpected turn in Meridian, Mississippi, where a chance detour leads to a fresh start, a home, and her own Tea Cake: a proud Pullman Porter named Baldwin Carter. Baldwin Carter also carries the marks of a difficult beginning. He escaped a loveless childhood and built a new life through the kindness of a caring stranger. Baldwin labors with dignity in a profession that demands he bow and scrape before passengers who scarcely regard him as a man. When he meets Nola, he recognizes an anchor—a woman who makes every inch of him stand tall. Across loss, hardship, and months of painful separation, Nola and Baldwin must reckon with their past to claim a future together. Their sacrifices belong not only to themselves but to all those who will follow, searching for a better life.
