Rosa Menkman: Angel's Remains
Season 3 of Artwrld Sessions is presented in partnership with Rhizome, the international hub for new media art.
Each session is recorded for a live online audience and co-presented by Bri Griffin, Community Designer at Rhizome, and Josh Goldblum, Artwrld Founder and CEO.
This week we welcome Rosa Menkman.
Some images outlive their original meaning. They become myth.
As they circulate, they may lose provenance, shift aesthetic, and even speak for someone or something else. What erodes is not just meaning, but the conditions — framing, context, and format — that once defined the image and its legibility.
About Rosa Menkman
Rosa Menkman has spent fifteen years making that erosion visible.
She's the Dutch artist and theorist behind The Collapse of PAL, Vernacular of File Formats, and Beyond Resolution — works that treat glitches, compression artifacts, and broken codecs not as errors but as evidence. Evidence of the choices, biases, and power structures baked into the technologies we use to look at art.
Join us for a live conversation on:
How images drift from provenance into myth
Why every resolution, frame, and format is a political decision
The artworks she's making now at the edge of what screens can render
About Rhizome
Rhizome champions internet art and culture through commissions, exhibition, and digital preservation, online at rhizome.org and in partnership with its longtime affiliate and host, the New Museum in New York City.
Founded in 1996 by artist Mark Tribe as an intimate email list connecting some of the first artists to work on the web and now—more than twenty years later—a thriving nonprofit with robust, multi-tiered programming, Rhizome has played an integral role in the history, definition, and growth of art engaged with the internet.
