From Coping to Change: Community Knowledge for Trans Climate Resilience.

This project will document how trans people, cope with climate-related challenges and use this community knowledge to develop practical recommendations for change. It builds on two community-led studies by Transmen Collective.

Invisible in the Storm found that climate events affect access to healthcare, food, water, shelter, livelihoods and mental health. Among participants, 51% experienced discrimination during climate crises, while 49% reported disruptions to healthcare, including gender-affirming care.

Left Out in the Heat explored how extreme heat intersects with binding, hormone therapy, economic insecurity, housing and access to safe public infrastructure. Through an online consultation on 26 September and an in-person workshop on 27 September, we aim to engage approximately 20–25 transmasculine participants across the two events.

The consultation will create space for participants to reflect on the research findings and share their own experiences, coping strategies and peer-support practices. Together, we will document what helps people navigate extreme heat and other climate disruptions, what barriers remain, and what additional support is needed.

The Bangalore workshop will build on these contributions. Participants will identify three priority changes, and develop specific requests for relevant healthcare providers, local authorities, and climate or disaster-response institutions.

Each request will identify an institution to approach, a willing community lead, and an initial action.

The process will produce three connected outputs:
1. A Community Climate Resilience Knowledge Map documenting coping practices, peer-support networks, available resources and unmet needs.
2. A community-informed policy brief presenting priority recommendations for inclusive climate response and continuity of healthcare, including gender-affirming care.
3. A community-led advocacy action plan setting out the agreed priorities, institutions to approach, responsibilities and next steps.

Participants will have an opportunity to review the findings before the outputs are finalised. Participation will be voluntary, with clear choices about anonymity, quotations, photographs and recording. Within a month of the events, we aim to begin outreach to relevant institutions and seek at least one substantive conversation about the community’s recommendations. This will provide a concrete first step towards turning the findings into collective advocacy.
