Climate Resilience for Healthy Communities: Awareness and Preparedness on Climate Change, Heat Waves and Public Health
Climate change has emerged as one of the most significant public health challenges worldwide. Rising temperatures, erratic weather patterns, and increasingly frequent heat waves are exposing communities to heightened health risks, including heat exhaustion, heat stroke, dehydration, and the worsening of existing medical conditions. Vulnerable populations such as children, older persons, outdoor workers, and individuals with chronic illnesses are particularly at risk.
Although Jammu & Kashmir has historically experienced a moderate climate, changing weather patterns and increasing summer temperatures have highlighted the need for greater public awareness and preparedness.
A significant challenge is the limited awareness of the health impacts of extreme heat, preventive measures, climate-resilient health practices, and the importance of community-level preparedness. Students and young people can play a critical role in spreading awareness beyond educational institutions by sharing knowledge with their families and communities. Strengthening awareness among youth therefore creates a multiplier effect, contributing to broader community preparedness.
To address these challenges, Uri Foundation proposes a one-day awareness programme in collaboration with YCRN, the Health Department, Local Administration, Municipal Committee, and educational institutions. The programme will enhance knowledge of climate change, heat-wave preparedness, and public health while encouraging participants to become advocates for climate resilience within their communities.
