In this hands-on session, you’ll learn how to apply motion design fundamentals to your work, even if you’ve never opened After Effects before.
Learn from Esteban González, a freelance Motion Designer whose client list includes industry leaders like Koto, Animade, and Art&Graft. He’ll walk you through the fundamentals of animation and show you how to bring static designs to life in After Effects.
You’ll explore how motion builds on the design skills you already have, and leave with the confidence and tools to start animating your own projects.
🧠 What You’ll Learn
Core animation concepts and tools, such as key animation principles, the timeline, keyframes, and animation curves (easing) for creating fluid, natural movement.
A practical file workflow to prepare your static designs in Illustrator and bring them into After Effects to begin animating.
Tools to work on those animations having the foundation concepts to not just "move" something but make it feel real.

Intro to Motion for Designers: Why motion isn’t a separate career path, and how your existing design skills (like composition, color, and typography) form the foundation for motion work. Explore how motion design is becoming an expected skill in modern design roles and how learning it gives you a competitive edge.
The Fundamentals of Animation: An introduction to the 12 Principles of Animation, defined by Disney, that make motion feel “alive.” You’ll learn how concepts like Squash & Stretch and Anticipation relate directly to design fundamentals — and how they can elevate your work from simple movement to expressive storytelling.
Tools & Workflow: From Static to Dynamic: Get a practical overview of the motion design toolkit inside After Effects. You’ll learn how to use the Timeline, Keyframes, Easing (via Animation Curves and the Graph Editor), Layers, and Pre-comps. Plus, you'll learn how to prep your Illustrator files properly for seamless import into After Effects.
Applying Motion Thinking to Design: Shift your design mindset to think in motion. Learn how to sketch motion sequences, align animation with user expectations, and use motion as a storytelling tool. Explore how to analyze reference animations (via Pinterest) and start planning your own sequences effectively.
Hands-On Practice & Deconstruction: Break down a real animation project file to see how everything comes together. Then, try it yourself: organize a simple sequence, test timing, and see what happens when you apply principles in real tools. Get real-time support and tips from Esteban throughout.
