Collective CT: Audiences and New Paths to Production - A Fireside Chat with Yale Ventures Artist-in-Residence Mara Isaacs
What does it take for an extraordinary creative idea to become something bigger—a production, a company, a community, a movement?
Join us for a fireside chat with Tony® and Grammy® Award-winning producer Mara Isaacs, whose career has been built around helping ambitious artistic ideas find their audience, their partners, their path to market—and their place in the world.
Across more than 200 productions, from boundary-pushing independent work to Hadestown on Broadway and around the world, Mara has worked at the intersection of artistic vision, producing, entrepreneurship and audience. She has also been at the forefront of a larger question facing the cultural sector: what should the future of creative work actually look like?
At a moment when many of the field’s inherited models are being reconsidered, Mara’s work offers a powerful example of what it means not simply to succeed within an existing system, but to imagine new ones. Through Octopus Theatricals she has built new platforms, partnerships and pathways for artists, producers and audiences—expanding the possibilities for how creative work can be developed, financed, shared and sustained.
We’ll talk about how producers recognize possibility before everyone else can see it. How do you know who a work is for? How do you bring people into an idea that does not fully exist yet? How do you find the collaborators, champions, partners and audiences who can help it grow? And what becomes possible when artists and producers begin designing the structures around their work rather than simply inheriting them?
The conversation will build on concepts we have been exploring—audience segmentation, beachhead markets, MVPs and go-to-market strategy—but take them far beyond the framework. Mara will help us examine what these ideas look like when the stakes are real: when artists are building careers, producers are taking risks, audiences are being cultivated, capital is being committed and entirely new models for creative work are beginning to emerge.
This is a conversation about scale, possibility and reimagining what the cultural sector can become—with one of the producers helping shape what comes next.
