Join us on Wednesday, 9 September at 18:00 at the Commons Hub Brussels for an evening on what we stand to lose, and what we might recover, as the intelligence age arrives.

The Coming Storm: Values, Safety, and Hope in the Intelligence Age

The world we were born in no longer exists — and the changes have started coming, and they won't stop coming. What can we learn from philosophy of worlds past to face the world to come?

AI systems are improving quickly, and it is plausible that within years we see systems that outperform humans at most cognitive work, including AI research itself, at which point progress could compound faster than any human institution can follow.

Such a world would strip the field of meaning for people acculturated to modern virtues, which take for granted that the world turns on what we do. So what holds, once it doesn't?

We'll hear from Joseph Fridman, an editor and writer working across science, technology, media, and society. He works for the Institute for Progress, where he edits work on how we build, fund critical research, and adapt to new technologies, including The Launch Sequence. He is also a strategic advisor to Convergent Research.

Schedule

  • 18:00 | Arrivals

  • 18:20 | Presentation and fireside chat with Joseph Fridman moderated by David Timis

This event is organised by the Brussels AGI Collective, a community exploring what advanced AI means for Europe's future, and supported by BlueDot Impact, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing AI safety by training and connecting talented people to work on technical, policy, and societal challenges. Since 2021, BlueDot has trained over 7,000 people worldwide, with thousands already working in high impact roles at places such as Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and the UK’s AI Security Institute.

We are delighted to be hosted at Commons Hub Brussels, a citizen-led community centre at the heart of Brussels.
