Join the Society of Women Writers for an intimate conversation with writer, illustrator, and book cover designer Georgie Stewart.
In this moderated session, we’ll step behind the scenes of book cover design to explore how a story becomes a visual concept, from the earliest creative brief to the final cover on the shelf. We’ll discuss Georgie’s approach to interpreting a manuscript, collaborating with authors and publishers, and finding the imagery, typography, and visual language that can capture the essence of an entire story in a single design.
Georgie Stewart is a writer and illustrator based in Devon. Alongside creating over twenty book covers for clients including Penguin Random House and HarperCollins, Georgie writes and illustrates her own novels. Her work has been featured in British Vogue, and in 2024 she was selected as the winner of the Appledore Book Festival Art Prize. Georgie lives a cosy, quiet life in a cottage by the sea, where she spends most of her time in her garden shed studio, drawing inspiration from her surroundings.
Throughout the conversation, we’ll explore Georgie’s path into book cover design, how she translates stories into compelling visual identities, and what the creative process actually looks like between designer, author, and publisher. We’ll also talk about covers that have been particularly meaningful to her, how designs can evolve dramatically from their original concepts, common misconceptions authors have about the process, and the trends currently shaping book design and visual storytelling.
We’ll close the evening with a live audience Q&A, giving members the opportunity to ask Georgie about her creative process, working with cover designers and illustrators, and what writers should know as they begin thinking about the visual life of their own books.
