Read the Room: Immersive or Coercive? with Abbott Miller of Pentagram
About the Presentation
What makes an experience truly immersive—and when does immersion begin to dictate how an audience engages?
In this Futurespaces session, Abbott Miller, Partner at Pentagram, will explore the relationship between “ambient” and “linear” media through two distinctly different immersive projects.
The first is a permanent exhibition about John F. Kennedy at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The second is a projection-based environment exploring rock and roll, which premiered in Las Vegas before traveling to Barcelona and Montreal. Through the differences and similarities between these two projects, Miller will examine contrasting approaches to creating immersive environments and shaping the audience experience.
Join us Thursday for this presentation, followed by an intimate Q&A.
About our Presenter
Abbott Miller is a designer, writer, and partner in Pentagram’s New York office whose work explores the cultural role of design and the public life of the written word. Across books, magazines, identities, exhibitions, and editorial projects, his multidisciplinary practice brings content and form together to create experiences that inform, engage, and shape how ideas are understood.
Before joining Pentagram in 1999, Miller founded the multidisciplinary studio Design/Writing/Research, where, in collaboration with Ellen Lupton, he pioneered the concept of the “designer as author”—an approach in which designers play an active role in developing both the content and form of a project.
His work has received numerous honors, including medals from the Society for Publication Designers, three National Magazine Award nominations, and the inaugural Chrysler Award for Innovation in Design, awarded to Miller and Lupton in 1994. He is a member of the Type Directors Club, the Society for Experiential Graphic Design (SEGD), and Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI), and teaches in the Graphic Design Department at the Maryland Institute College of Art.
Miller is also an accomplished author and critic. His writing has appeared in Eye, Print, and other publications, and he is the co-author of four books, including the influential Design/Writing/Research: Writing on Graphic Design. A survey of his work, Abbott Miller: Design and Content, was published by Princeton Architectural Press.
