About Event

We open the Zcash Protocol Specification at the beginning: §1.1's blunt warning that Zcash security is entirely a function of consensus, and §1.2's high-level overview of the full protocol: notes, commitments, nullifiers, chain value pools, and the core privacy claim that distinguishes Zcash from every mixing-based alternative.

First 30 minutes: a guided read of the spec text itself. We'll define the key terms on their own terms:

  • What is a note?

  • What does a nullifier actually do?

  • What does the spec mean when it says your spent note can't be linked to the transaction that created it?

Second 30 minutes: open conversation with co-host Nate Wilcox, one of the authors of the spec, on what these two sections mean in practice, how the design decisions in §1.2 have held up across four protocol eras, and what questions are still worth pulling on.

Bring the PDF: zips.z.cash/protocol/protocol.pdf. We're starting at page 8.

Protocol Study is a 12-session guided reading of the Zcash Protocol Specification. Biweekly Tuesdays. Recorded by Zcash Brazil.
