Outdoor Discussion Walk: AI for Math & Science | Terence Tao
Let's go for a round-trip walk from Foggy Bottom to National Academy of Sciences and back and discuss a keynote speech by Terence Tao at a Science x AI Summit co-organized by SAIR.
AI now generates and verifies formal proofs faster than mathematics can absorb them: correct results that nobody has explained, published, or taught. Terence Tao calls it proof indigestion. On the day of this talk, he and 24 fellow Fields Medalists published a declaration on the same problem, "A Severe Misalignment of AI in Mathematics (https://mathandai.org). Frontier labs optimize for what can be graded, and the things mathematics values most, explanation, insight, and understanding, do not grade cleanly.

During the event:
10:30am-11:00am: meet at the square south of Foggy Bottom Metro exit for group introduction.
11:00am - 12:30pm: Walk toward National Academy of Sciences, then back. Here is the walking route: https://scenic-walk.com/#/2gMNehrN (during the event, the organizer will live broadcast group location, so that people that arrive late can catch up).
12:30pm - : Optional Lunch at Ten Ten West End.
