About This Event
👻Cool Down with a Little Chill!
Get ready for a spooky summer evening with AJC!
In Japan, ghost stories and tales of the supernatural have long been a summertime tradition — a fun way to feel a little chill during the hottest months.
Now in its third year, AJC’s annual Chilling Night brings this unique Japanese tradition of nōryō (納涼) to Austin through a classic ghost film, a mini-lecture, and fun cultural activities.

Botan Dōrō / The Bride from Hades
This year, we’ll screen Botan Dōrō, based on one of Japan’s best-known traditional ghost stories.
A haunting tale of love, longing, and the supernatural, Botan Dōrō has been told and retold for generations and remains a classic of Japanese ghost storytelling.
📖 Cultural Talk: Why Ghost Stories in Summer?
Before the screening, a mini-lecture will introduce the Japanese summer tradition of nōryō and explore the cultural background of the film, including Japanese ghost lore, folklore, and traditional storytelling. This context will help you better understand the story and appreciate the movie from a cultural perspective.

日本では昔から、暑い夏に怪談や幽霊の話を楽しみ、怖さで涼を感じる「納涼」の文化があります。
今年で3回目を迎えるAJC恒例の「Chilling Night」。日本の怪談映画と文化講座、納涼アクティビティを通して、日本ならではの夏の楽しみ方を体験してみませんか？

日本を代表する怪談のひとつ『牡丹燈籠』。
愛と執着、そしてこの世ならざるものを描く、世代を超えて語り継がれてきた怪談を映画でお楽しみください。
📖 Cultural Talk：なぜ日本では夏に怪談？
上映前には、日本の納涼文化やお盆と霊の世界、そして怪談が語り・落語、歌舞伎から映画へと広がっていった流れを、『牡丹燈籠』の背景とともにご紹介します。
文化を知ってから観ると、映画がもっと面白くなります。
