How We Dine Is How We Live — Summer Tables 2026
Eritrea Dinner

“TRACE.”
The body remembers what history forgets.

How We Dine Is How We Live is a series of intimate summer gatherings taking place in Vilnius throughout June and July. Each evening is shaped around one cook who hosts the table through food, atmosphere, memory, and presence.

The Eritrean evening unfolds through the idea of trace — the marks history leaves inside people long after departure, occupation, migration, and silence. Some traces remain visible in architecture, language, ritual, and memory. Others settle quietly inside the body, carried across generations in gestures, habits, relationships, and ways of surviving. Parts of the evening menu will be revealed gradually closer to the gathering, allowing the flavours, atmosphere, and rhythm of the table to unfold over time.

The evening is conceived as a curated encounter unfolding around a live story from curator Kamal’s ongoing writing work, From Postcolonial to Postsoviet — A Personal Journey. Through reflections on childhood migration, family memory, exile, language, dignity, and the emotional afterlives of colonial history, the evening gradually opens into a shared space where food, storytelling, atmosphere, and collective reflection become inseparable.

The evening begins with an Eritrean coffee ritual, continues through traditional dishes shared around the table, and slowly closes with tea and conversation.

For the Eritrean evening, the reflection carried into the table is:

“The body remembers what history forgets.”
