​When AI can make the work, what are students actually learning?

​August has that strange edge: still summer, but September is already in the room.

​On August 20, educators, students, parents, youth workers, and builders are gathering at Ethọ́s Lab to work through what AI is changing about creativity, authorship, and student agency before the new school year gets loud.

​The session will be led by Philippe Pasquier, professor at SFU and director of the Metacreation Lab for Creative AI. Since 2008, Philippe has worked across scientific research, artistic practice, and education, exploring how humans and machines create together.

​This is not a lecture, product demo, or another round of magic-versus-doom theatre. Philippe will set the frame, Nessa Palmer and Kris Krüg will facilitate small-group discussion, and everyone will bring a real situation from a classroom, family, youth program, or learning community.

​Bring a confusing policy. Bring a student workaround. Bring a tool you are testing, a privacy concern, a creative assignment, an assessment problem, or a question that needs other brains before September.

​We’ll focus on three questions

• ​What should students understand about authorship, integrity, and collaboration with AI?

• ​How do we design learning that protects curiosity, confidence, and agency?

• ​Where do consent, privacy, and youth data need firmer boundaries?

​What you’ll leave with

​Clearer language, practical ideas, and a stronger set of principles for approaching AI, creativity, and student agency in the coming school year.

​No AI expertise required. Snacks included.

​What to expect

• ​A practical opening frame from Philippe

• ​Honest conversation grounded in real education and youth-program situations

• ​Small-group discussion so everyone gets to talk

• ​Space to share tools, workflows, prompts, projects, and experiments

• ​More kitchen table than conference stage

​Schedule

• ​6:30 PM: Doors open

• ​7:00 PM: Conversation begins

• ​8:00 PM: Formal wrap, followed by mingling

• ​8:30 PM: Doors close

​Tickets and access

• ​Community admission is CA$20.

• ​BC + AI members attend free, with membership verified.

• ​Students and youth attend free. Anyone under 16 should come with a parent, guardian, or responsible adult.

• ​The event is in a ground-floor space. Email us in advance about wheelchair access or other access needs.

• ​Casual event photography may happen; no session recording is planned. Tell a host if you prefer not to be photographed.

• ​Snacks are included. Email us about dietary needs.

• ​The venue is near Olympic Village and Main Street–Science World SkyTrain stations. Street parking is limited.
