Climates of Migration: A Conversation with Dominic Thomas

​We are pleased to welcome Dominic Thomas, Madeleine Letessier Professor of French and Francophone Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles and Gutenberg Chair in Ecology and Propaganda at the University of Strasbourg, for a lunchtime discussion of his new book, Climates of Migration: Ecology, Literature and Propaganda (London and New York: Anthem Press, 2025).

​Climates of Migration examines, through transregional and transhistorical lenses, how environmental and migration issues intersect, and how disinformation and fear generated by their political instrumentalisation are reshaping contemporary societies. Engaging media discourse, literature, art, visual culture, policy-making, and new technologies, the book foregrounds the afterlives of European empires and explores how colonial history, nationalism, Far-Right politics, EU policy, and questions of sustainability shape contemporary debates on ecology and mobility.

​Professor Thomas will be in conversation with Doyle Calhoun, University Assistant Professor of Francophone Postcolonial Studies at the University of Cambridge and Fellow of Peterhouse, and Aliya Ram, Junior Research Fellow of Peterhouse and in-coming Assistant Professor of English at UCLA.
