Alt+Shift - artist in fermentation, with Shu Lea Cheang
Join us for a public conversation with Shu Lea Cheang, a pathbreaking artist and filmmaker whose work spans cinema, installation, networked media, and performance.
In this online event, Cheang will reflect on recent shifts in her practice—from cinema (UKI, 2023), to large-scale installation (KI$$ KI$$ , 2025), to long-form theatrical work (Hagay Dreaming, 2020–2026)—and situate these works within a decades-long engagement with technology, embodiment, and queer worldmaking.
The discussion will also touch on Cheang’s forthcoming exhibition LOVER LOVE, opening April 2, 2026 at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art in New York City. LOVER LOVE is a large-scale interactive video installation centered on intergenerational trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming performers, addressing agency, survival, and intimacy in a time of heightened political precarity.
Following a presentation of Cheang’s work, audience members will be invited to participate in a moderated discussion and Q&A. The event will run just under one hour.
