"Hands On" Night: Calder Style Mobile Making

​During this community workshop, you will learn the basics of creating mobiles inspired by the work of Alexander Calder. We will explore balance, movement, shape, and composition while constructing a small hanging sculpture from steel wire and sheet metal.

​We will begin by looking at how Calder used simple shapes and lines to create sculptures that move through space. You will then experiment with different shapes and arrangements before learning how to balance multiple elements on a wire armature.

​The goal is not to copy Calder, but to use his approach as a starting point for creating your own moving sculpture.
