ORUNRERE JUNETEENTH
Juneteenth was the summer's excitement brought alive growing up in the Black South; not only do we celebrate having this precious life, our generation, and everything we’ve done to come this far, but we also have the summer's fruits and flowers, decorated parades, Black expression, and each other. Doesn’t that sound a bit like paradise? Orunrere?
Join me on Friday, May 20th, for ORUNRERE JUNETEENTH! I am inviting everyone to a MAKESTREAM Moodboard and Memory Jam! Central to my installation is the ‘toile’ designed by me to wrap all furniture. Inspect a little closer, and you will find a lithograph-inspired mountain range with cyanotype collages of my archive photography featuring old, good friends from my childhood and then new friends, made even on the date of the shoo, who have now since become old, good friends. These Images were shot at home between Brooklyn and Lagos over the last seven years. In all, A sumptuous series of memory given to me by practice of collage, tracing mountain tops and ranges I have reached on my journey as an artist and founder of SOLA Market!
As this installation slowly wines down I invite folks to take a pause with me this Juneteenth weekend to consider what is creatively on their mind and what memories they are looking to honor. I will have paper graphics provided by Secret Riso Club, magazines, and more paper-based elements to get you started, but please feel free to bring anything you would like to include in your mood board. At 5p, we will pause for 20 minute tour of ORUNRERE by me, the artist, Oluwakemi Oritsejafor. Plus, I will have Liberian Rice Bread to share, a vegan ginger breakfast fave, and dessert when dressed up!
