About Event

Tea and ceramics have had a long and intimate relationship over the course of history. There are many different varieties of tea cups that  appear across different time periods. Melody Li, a PhD student at University of Oxford, investigates this link through her research on the archaeology of tea. Collaborating with Jynsym Ong to replicate four historical cups based on archaeological artefacts and museum objects, Melody is running a series of tea drinking experiments to explore what it would feel like to drink from ancient cups. These experiments will be run as part of a collaborative project with the School of Archaeology, Crossmodal Laboratory (Department of Experimental Psychology), WeaveYard and GLAM, hosted at the Ashmolean Museum. Melody is delighted to also show case these cups by Jynsym at the 5+1 Gallery for the Kissako exhibition. Join Jynsym and Melody to discuss together the history of tea and ongoing archaeological research, and how these pieces converse with the artist's wider practice and body of work presented at Kissako while drinking directly from Jynsym’s historical set.

This event will involve:

-Artist's Talk

- Tea Tasting

- Discussion on archaeological tea wares
