About Jaw̄ab
Jaw̄ab is a Literary Salon series for Muslim Women who want to explore questions of faith, life and society through reading, conversation and shared reflection.
Each season, there will be an overarching theme (a Hadith, an ayah, a philosophy) and each month, we will explore this theme from a different perspective, going deeper in our understanding.
By the end of each 5-month Salon series, we will have:
Read perspectives from different historical and contemporary Islamic thinkers;
Engaged with new thinking from inspiring thought leaders across different disciplines (arts, environmentalism, psychology); and,
Participated in facilitated discussions and activities with a cohort of up to 20 other curious Muslim women.
We have designed our ticketing approach so that it can result in this intentional community (in shaa Allah!) so we are selling tickets for the entire season and not session-by-session.
However, we know that not everyone is able to able to purchase all 5 tickets upfront at this time whether due to cost or uncertain schedules (e.g. people with shift work like healthcare workers).
If paying the full amount upfront isn't workable for you, please reach out to us at @jawab.mws on Instagram and we'll work with you to find an alternative so that you can still join.
While we are intentional about our desire to create a community in which consistency fosters trust and belonging, we do not to make it difficult for those who really want to participate.
What we will be exploring
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to Abdullah ibn Umar: "Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler along a path."
This inaugural season of Jaw̄ab reflects on this Hadith and asks: What does it really mean to live this way in a world full of complexities?
Through a 5-part exploration, we will examine the journey itself, its ups and downs, and how we relate to nature and others as we go on. Each session builds on the last and our knowledge deepens month after month. The schedule for Season 1 is as follows:
Getting ready for the travel: Understanding the journey (September 20)
The realities of the journey: How to navigate complexity (October 18) - guest speaker
How do we journey responsibly? Us and the earth (November 15) - guest speaker
Lessons across time: Learning from those who came before (December 13) - guest speaker
Bringing it all together / Preparing for Ramadan (January 11)
The London salons will take place once a month on a Sunday from 2:30pm-5:00pm at Poplar Union, an arts and community centre in East London.
What you can expect from us
On the first day of each month, you will receive a pre-session dispatch which is a short article introducing the topic of the month, invited thought leaders (October, November, December), and some questions to get you thinking. We will also share some resources (videos, podcasts, books, articles) that we've come across that provide interesting perspectives on the topic. There is no requirement to read/watch/listen to any of these resources - they are there for you to engage with however you'd like! The dispatch will be available on our Substack to the general public later on that month.
At the end of each month, we will be emailing you a Salon-exclusive video summarizing the key discussion points across both the London and Toronto gatherings. All contributions will be anonymized and the purpose of these videos is to highlight any interesting similarities or points of difference across the different conversations.
All participants will also receive a notebook for you to use throughout the season to jot down any thoughts you have on these topics, before, during, and after our gatherings. Drinks and light refreshments will also be provided at each Salon.

This gathering is for Muslim women of all ages, abilities, and from all backgrounds who have been longing for something intellectually stimulating and fun.
