movie night: They Were Promised the Sea (2013) - Arab Jews between Homeland and Promised Land
Join us for an evening to watch They Were Promised the Sea (2013) followed by discussion with film maker Kathy Wazana.
This documentary journeys through Morocco, Israel, Palestine, and New York to explore Arab-Jewish identity, memory, and political separation. Sparked by Wazana’s research into her Moroccan-Jewish family history, the film examines how communities that lived together for centuries were divided through political maneuvering, while highlighting voices that resisted this rupture. Anchored by a haunting Andalusian and Sephardic score in Arabic, Hebrew, and Ladino, the film offers a reflective and challenging meditation on homeland, exile, and the possibilities of shared futures.
