Jersey Club Grooves is an all-levels dance class exploring the movement, musicality, and infectious energy of Jersey Club and the Black underground dance cultures that surround it. Rooted in Newark's Jersey Club tradition and drawing connections to House and Baltimore Club, we'll play with foundational grooves, footwork, rhythm, freestyle, and movement combinations designed to get you out of your head and into the music.
No previous dance experience needed. Come ready to learn, experiment, sweat, and catch a vibe. All bodies and all levels welcome.
Artist Bio:
Ezra Myles is a dancer, choreographer, teaching artist, and cultural producer whose movement practice is rooted in Black social dance traditions across the African diaspora.
Born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, Ezra's earliest dance education happened on dance floors and at parties, immersed in the Black social and cultural dance traditions of House, breaking, and stepping. Ezra grew up as New Jersey House, and Baltimore Club circulated through the region and Newark's own Jersey Club movement took shape; he developed a movement vocabulary grounded in groove, improvisation, social exchange, and the joy of being present with the music and one another.
Much like the wide-ranging samples that animate Jersey Club music, Ezra's dance journey has since carried him across a variety of African diasporic movement traditions, including more than a decade of study and performance in Trinidad & Tobago Carnival arts. He studied Carnival as Cultural Performance at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad under the late acclaimed playwright and director Tony Hall, and Samba no Pé as a principal dancer with SambaFunk! Carnaval Explosion under King Theo Aytchan Williams. In 2023, he was crowned King of Carnaval San Francisco. He is also the founder and artistic director of MasFX Dance, where his work explores Carnival, traditional masquerade, social dance, and contemporary performance.
Whether teaching Jersey Club, House, or Carnival movement, Ezra approaches dance as something we build together: a conversation between music, body, culture, memory, and community.
