The Human Edge: Building Products That Matter in an AI World with Gabe Grieve
We’re pumped to have Gabe Grieve from Unscripted join us for Byron Design Thinking # 13, diving into the real shift happening in product design right now. AI might be lowering the barriers to building, but it’s also raising the stakes on understanding. Gabe’s going to unpack what that means for anyone designing, building, shaping or launching products today.
For a long time, the biggest barrier to building new products wasn’t ideas, it was access to good engineers. Entrepreneurs with capital but no technical team would turn to offshore dev shops or contracting agencies, but those setups rarely produced genuinely thoughtful products. Engineers and designers were paid to deliver whatever the client wanted, not to question whether it solved a real problem. That transactional model built a moat of technical knowledge that left founders dependent and detached from the “why” behind their product.
Now, with AI-assisted tools lowering the barriers to designing and building software, that dynamic is shifting. Anyone can generate a polished interface or working prototype in hours. But as building gets easier, understanding becomes harder and more valuable. The differentiator isn’t how quickly you can produce features, it’s how deeply you understand the people you’re building for. That’s why the designer’s role is more essential than ever, not less. In an era where AI can only remix existing knowledge, designers and product thinkers who can navigate ambiguity, talk to real customers, sense nuance, and uncover insights that don’t exist online will shape the next wave of meaningful products. Without that human connection, AI will only make everything faster, and more homogenised. The future of product isn’t about building more, it’s about listening better.
