About Event

Step into an immersive exploration of the vibrant heritage and botanical wonders of Oaxaca.

We invite you to connect with the ancient artistry of natural pigments while creating pots of magic color and enjoy a delicious outdoor feast.

This afternoon creative retreat is at the Conscious Color Dye Lab with food by Fancy Feast Supper Club.

We will dive deep into the history and application of traditional Mexican dyes, including:

  • Cochineal Red (Nocheztli): Derived from a parasitic insect that lives on the nopal cactus. It produces a spectrum ranging from soft pinks and corals to a deep, royal crimson.

  • Indigo Blue (Añil): Fermented from the leaves of the Indigofera plant. This dye creates a range of "Maya Blues" and deep cobalts: a process that involves oxidizing the fiber in the open air to reveal the hidden color.

  • Marigold & Pericón Yellow: The wild "mint marigold" (Tagetes lucida) yields a rich, sun-drenched golden yellow: synonymous with both the local flora and the spiritual pathways of Día de Los Muertos.

Participants will learn the technical nuances of shifting these colors through various mordants and modifiers, mirroring the rich cultural stories told through these dyes for centuries. The experience culminates in a communal Oaxacan feast by our spring fed pond.

Each person will be provided 4 linen napkins and place mats to dye during the workshop. To bring a splash of color into your own dining space.

You will leave with full confidence to naturally dye at home using our step by step guide.
