PDN Pro-Social. Prosocial Design for Healthy Chatbot Use

​Social media famously hijacks our attention, but research has begun to tell us how design interventions can help unhook us and reduce unwanted use. Now LLM chatbots, with yet more potential to command our time and build dependency, can also hijack our need for connection and attachment. Can some of the design interventions developed for social media translate to an LLM context, or do we need new, innovative approaches?

​In this Pro-Social we'll talk with Becca Ricks, Project Director of the Public Technology Leadership Collaborative (PTLC) at Data & Society, where she is leading an expert working group examining how design choices and interventions in LLM chatbots impact user well-being. In this conversation, she’ll share early findings from their research mapping out where evidence is strongest and where more research is urgently needed, as we explore the potential for prosocial design to empower healthier chatbot use.
