Scaling Nature-Positive Roads: Finance, Policy and Institutional Pathways

​In the first session of our roads series, we explored three case studies from across Latin America, showcasing how Conservation International teams are working to design and manage roads in ways that strengthen climate resilience while creating better conditions for nature and people.

​In this second session, the Global Green-Gray Community of Practice is partnering with Autocase and the Global Environment Facility-funded Greening Transportation Infrastructure Development (GRID) Integrated Program led by WWF to explore the economic evidence, policies, financing approaches, and institutional arrangements needed to take nature-positive road infrastructure to scale.

​Erin Bishop, Principal Economist at Autocase, will demonstrate how economic analysis can support funding justification, design prioritization, and advocacy efforts for nature-positive infrastructure. Drawing on an cost benefit analysis of coastal highway alternatives in Colombia’s Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that incorporates financial, social, and ecosystem benefits to strengthen the business case for infrastructure that works with nature.

Nilanga Jayasinghe, Director of Asia Wildlife at WWF, will present the Handbook to Mitigate the Impacts of Roads and Railways on Asian Elephants. She will explore how technical guidance can be translated into policy and practice through dissemination, capacity-building, and collaboration among conservation, cross-sectoral government, engineering and funding institutions — including efforts to strengthen cross-ministerial coordination in range countries.
