"The Coordination Problem: Lessons from China's Race to Replace Oil"
The climate movement mostly treats the energy transition as a moral argument or a technology race. China treats it as a security problem. Short on oil, energy and the land to feed itself, Beijing needs fossil alternatives to succeed, so it builds the conditions for them to win: officials rewarded for scaling new companies, shared infrastructure, patient capital, guaranteed customers. In doing so, China has defied the western neoliberal assumption that the free market alone will drive the transition we need.
One of the clearest live examples is biomanufacturing, where microbes grow the fuels, food and materials we currently pump out of the ground, and where China is moving faster than anyone. This talk uses that race to make a broader point: incumbents aren't displaced by better technology, but by systems deliberately built to make challengers competitive. Climate change is ultimately a coordinated problem that will require coordinated solutions, and there are lessons to be learned from those already building with that logic. Western democracies won't copy China's state machinery, so what is our version of coordination infrastructure, and who builds it?
Speaker Bio:

Lost The Plot:
Lost The Plot is a monthly seminar series - virtual and free - that talks about the systemic issues of climate change. Open to all but targeted at professionals working in climate and sustainability who want to more deeply connect with climate - which often is quite absent from our careers - and examine what it is We are all doing (and NOT doing) to address this generation-defining challenge. We seek to dispel the technooptimist standpoint inherent to the broader effort today, and instead look critically at the sociopolitical systems that have prohibited stronger and more meaningful action to date. Each month a different speaker will lead a unique discussion, come for one or all, and view whichever you miss on YouTube after. Learn more at www.lost-the-plot.com .
