What makes a bad boss… bad?

According to Wall Street Journal bestselling author Mita Mallick, bad bosses aren’t born—they’re built.

They’re shaped by circumstances, pressures, blind spots, and cultures that reward the wrong behaviors.
And if we’re not careful, any one of us could wake up one day and become that leader.

In this fireside chat, Mita takes us behind the scenes of her new book, The Devil Emails at Midnight, a must-read exposé of the 13 types of bad bosses she once endured, survived… and, at times, accidentally became herself.

Through stories that are both hilarious and heartbreaking, she challenges all of us—current and aspiring leaders—to break the cycle and lead with intention.

Together with Angela Cheng-Cimini, they’ll explore some of the most common (and costly) leadership pitfalls, including:

  • Saying we’re “too busy” for our teams—until midnight emails mysteriously appear

  • Micromanaging every detail (and redoing all the work)

  • Becoming disengaged, checked out, or uninterested in actually leading

  • Ruling with fear in hopes of driving results

  • Loving the spotlight… and taking credit for the team’s wins

  • And many more behaviors we’ve seen, felt, or survived

This session will remind us that a single good leader can change the entire experience of work.

And more importantly:
You can’t control the devil who emails at midnight.
But you can make sure that devil isn’t you.

About the Hosts

Mita Mallick is a Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author, storyteller, and changemaker on a mission to make workplaces more inclusive.

A lifelong student of storytelling—from studying product packaging as a kid to analyzing commercials instead of TV shows—Mita grew up rarely seeing people who looked like her represented.

As a dark-skinned Indian girl whose parents spoke “funny English,” she spent years being bullied, an experience that fueled her determination to create spaces where everyone feels like they belong.

Throughout her career as a multicultural marketer in beauty and consumer goods, Mita has championed representation of Black and Brown communities, built inclusive campaigns, and fought for products made for all skin tones.

She believes diversity of thought doesn’t happen without diversity of representation—and that when different lived experiences collide and collaborate, breakthrough ideas emerge.
