The Art of Shabbat presents: ''50 Voices Across the Shtetl Multiverse'' - a short poetic documentary by Shoshana Simons (premiere in LT), at Museum of Culture and Identity of Lithuanian Jews
A cozy afternoon of activities, including film screening, community reflection & discussion, live music by violinist Morgan Rosario Maruthiah, and... Bagels!

Vilna Gaon Museum of Jewish History and The Art of Shabbat project welcome filmmaker Shoshana Simons as a special guest! Join us for a screening of 50 Voices Across the Shtetl Multiverse - a short poetic documentary - and an introduction to Simons’ larger docu-fiction project The Shtetl Multiverse.
Drawing on over 50 hours of interviews with Jewish women across the diaspora on liberation and Jewish identity, 50 Voices Across the Shtetl Multiverse weaves intimate inner worlds with sounds and images from the former shtetl of Žagarė, Lithuania. United by shtetl heritage but with diverse nationalities, ideologies, and lived experiences today, the film brings together diverse, often dissonant voices in an attempt to build dialogue, empathy and understanding across difference in a time when they are especially needed.
The film also serves as a prequel to Simons’ broader project, The Shtetl Multiverse. You can learn more about The Shtetl Multiverse here. As part of our gathering, we will open space for those who wish to support financially its ongoing creation.
Reflection & discussion activities, live music, and delicious food will accompany the screening!
This screening is presented in dialogue with the current exhibition “And the Bride Came In…”, which brings together depictions of everyday life and ritual celebration to reflect a central theme of Jewish tradition: life itself is sanctified.
“And the Bride Came In…” features selected works by Simon Karczmar (1903–1982), a Litvak painter known for his vivid, memory-rich portrayals of shtetl life. Drawing on the world of his childhood, Karczmar’s paintings preserve the emotional texture of a community that no longer exists, capturing the rituals, humor, intimacy, and spiritual depth of shtetl life.
Together, the exhibition and the film create a dialogue between past and present, image and voice, tradition and contemporary interpretation, inviting viewers to explore Lithuanian Jewish identity across time.

Remdamasis daugiau nei 50 valandų trukmės interviu su žydėmis moterimis iš diasporos apie išsilaisvinimą ir žydų tapatybę, filmas „50 Voices Across the Shtetl Multiverse“ supina intymius vidinius pasaulius su garsais ir vaizdais iš buvusio Žagarės miestelio Lietuvoje. Sujungtas štetlo paveldas, bet skirtingos tautybės, ideologijos ir šiandienos gyvenimo patirtys, filmas sujungia įvairius, dažnai disonansinius balsus, bandydamas sukurti dialogą, empatiją ir supratimą tarp skirtumų tuo metu, kai tai ypač reikalinga.
Filmas taip pat yra Simons plačiau masto projekto „The Shtetl Multiverse“ priešistorė. Daugiau apie „The Shtetl Multiverse“ galite sužinoti čia. Susitikimo metu bus suteikta galimybė tiems, kurie nori finansiškai paremti šio projekto kūrimą.

Šis filmo peržiūrėjimas pristatomas kartu su dabartine paroda „And the Bride Came In…“, kurioje pateikiami kasdienio gyvenimo ir ritualinių švenčių vaizdai, atspindintys pagrindinę žydų tradicijos temą: pats gyvenimas yra šventas.
„And the Bride Came In…“ pristatomi atrinkti Simono Karczmaro (1903–1982) darbai. Šis litvako tapytojas žinomas dėl savo ryškių, atminties turtingų štetlo gyvenimo vaizdinių. Remdamasis savo vaikystės pasauliu, Karczmaro paveiksluose išsaugota nebeegzistuojančios bendruomenės emocinė tekstūra, užfiksuoti štetlo gyvenimo ritualai, humoras, intymumas ir dvasinis gilumas.
Paroda ir filmas kartu sukuria dialogą tarp praeities ir dabarties, vaizdo ir balso, tradicijos ir šiuolaikinės interpretacijos, kviesdami žiūrovus tyrinėti Lietuvos žydų tapatybę per laiką.
