From Climate Change to the Clinic: The Uninvited Guest Affecting Our Health
COVID-19 exposed how closely human health is tied to the environments we disrupt, inhabit, and design. While the pandemic is often viewed through the lens of healthcare systems and crisis response, it also revealed a deeper reality which is often less discussed: human activity is pushing against ecological limits, creating conditions that can heighten infectious disease risk, respiratory illness, heat stress, mental health strain, and broader social vulnerability.
This Green Drinks KL session in collaboration with WELL KL Community focuses on understanding the links between climate change, ecosystem degradation and public health. The session will ask what happens when environmental and health challenges are treated in silos and what it means to respond more holistically.
Dr. Bala Murali Sundram, Senior Medical Lecturer in Occupational & Environmental Health and Public Health Medicine Specialist at the University of Malaya, will examine how environmental disruption can amplify health risks, from infectious disease emergence and air pollution to heat exposure and community resilience. The discussion hopes to establish a shared understanding of the climate-health connection and why it matters for future decisions across policy, business, cities, and workplaces.
