Deep Dive Lectures - "Making Sense Of Monsters: Rationalising Odyssey”
Deep Dive is a new series of lecture nights in Barcelona.
🧠 Lecture: "Making Sense of Monsters: Rationalising Odyssey"
🎤 Speaker: Ariadna Arriaza, classicist, PHD in Greek mythology
📍 Location: sent to registered guests
📅 Wednesday, 26 August, doors open at 6:30 PM
A one-eyed giant. A woman who turns men into pigs. Something in the water that eats sailors.
People have been telling these stories for three thousand years, and others have been asking: okay, but what was it really?
The Greeks had answers, the Romans had different ones, and movie directors had other ideas.
Some of those answers are clever, some are ridiculous, one or two might even be right.
Ariadna is a classicist, and this is what she actually works on: not what the Odyssey means, but what happens to these stories over time and who keeps rewriting the monsters. She'll take a few of them and follow them all the way back.
You don't need to have read the Odyssey or seen the film to follow the lecture.
