Philosophy at the Museum: American Art before 20th Century

​This will be our first-ever tour exploring American art. While 20th-century American art is widely known, American art from earlier periods often receives less attention—but that does not make it any less fascinating.

​Have you ever seen the vast landscapes west of the Mississippi—the Rocky Mountains, endless cornfields, and the open American frontier? From the Revolutionary War to westward expansion, the story of America’s formation can be seen as a modern version of the Aeneid: a journey of struggle, displacement, and the search for a new home.

​This history is filled with contradictions and controversy, but the land—and the art it inspired—is truly beautiful.

​The program will include three 30-minute conversations, with participants divided into groups of 3–4 for each session. Through structured prompts and brief introductions before each conversation, participants will be invited to engage with the artworks through philosophical reflection and personal interpretation.
