Street Picnic on Bree
The Street Picnic is a gentle reclaiming of Bree Street, as part of Street Experiments Afrika by Young Urbanists, where cars give way to people, and asphalt is softened by a blanket sewn in community. Crafted during public workshops (Summer 2024-25) led by The MAAK and Picnic (by Faith Shields), this blanket bears the traces of many hands and voices, becoming both a material and a metaphor for shared space.
We will come together to share food, have conversations, and play Gather: Our People’s Library, a card game developed by the Zeitz MOCAA x UWC Fellows 2025. The game invites reflection on solidarity, belonging, and memory, turning the picnic into more than leisure - a moment of collective and radical imagination.
Organised by Youth Travel Collective and 1P2N.CPT, with support from The MAAK, Picnic by Faith Shields, Zeitz MOCAA x UWC Fellows, and Young Urbanists, the Street Picnic offers a few hours of connection, creativity, and joy in the heart of the city.
