When the Data Goes Dark: Preparing for Climate Disasters in an Era of Science Disinvestment

​Over the past year, climate science and environmental data and tools have faced steep disinvestment, but maintaining a strong scientific enterprise and the data it creates is critical to helping communities and businesses prepare for and respond to climate risks. When that data disappears, so does our ability to anticipate, prepare for, and respond to climate disasters before they strike.

​This panel starts by looking at what's been lost, and at the rescue efforts now underway to preserve high-fidelity climate data and disaster-cost datasets before they disappear for good. It then turns forward: what will it take to rebuild a more resilient, connected environmental data ecosystem — one built so that this kind of loss can't happen again?
