熱狂をこえて / Beyond the Fire

​1931年、樺太に生まれた南定四郎。1984年にゲイ解放運動を本格化させ、1994年、62歳で日本初のプライドパレードを実現させた。本作は、その半生を4年の歳月をかけて追ったドキュメンタリーである。本人の証言に加え、当時の関係者へのインタビュー、報道資料、写真、アニメーションを織り交ぜ、「ゼロ」から「イチ」を切り拓いた草の根運動の原点をたどる。だが映画は英雄譚にとどまらない。回を重ねるごとに運営は独善へと傾き、やがて大きな反発を招いて、南は自ら築いた運動の表舞台から退くことになる。熱狂から挫折へ——理想を掲げて先頭に立つすべての人に、本作は静かな問いを投げかける。

​In 1994, at the age of 62, Teishiro Minami organized Japan's first Pride parade — the culmination of a life spent carving "one" out of "zero" in the country's gay liberation movement. Filmed over four years, Hiroaki Matsuoka's documentary traces Minami's extraordinary half-century of activism through his own testimony, interviews with those who were there, archival reportage, photographs, and animation. But it refuses easy hagiography: as the parades grew, so did Minami's certainty in his own vision, until a mounting backlash pushed him from the movement he had built. A portrait of conviction and isolation, and of the uneasy distance between a movement's origins and how it chooses to remember them.
