About the Film
Fen(Points) follows the everyday lives of Li and Lianzi, a married couple who have worked as migrant laborers in a Chinese megacity for over twenty years. Without local household registration (hukou), their teenage son, Manshan, faces intense pressure as he prepares for high school entrance exams, while their younger son—left behind in their rural hometown—has been raised by his grandmother. Hoping for family reunion, Li and Lianzi apply for local hukou through the city’s point-based residency system. Yet without enough points, Manshan may be denied access to public high school, and their younger son may never join them. The title Fen (分) evokes multiple meanings: the points needed to secure residency, the scores determining school admission, and the separations—emotional and physical—that define the family’s struggle.
