PUBLIC STUDY: LOSE YOUR MOTHER
Join us for the first session of Public Study, Okrika's collaborative reading series. We're working through Saidiya Hartman's Lose Your Mother, focusing on the prologue "The Path of Strangers." Hartman travels to Ghana searching for her ancestry and confronts the impossibility of return—she's a stranger in the place her ancestors were taken from.
We'll explore what it means to navigate origins that have been erased and what we owe to histories we can't fully retrieve.
When you RSVP, we'll send the excerpts ahead of time so you can read and annotate before we meet. But if you don't get to it, that's fine—come anyway. We'll have printed copies, and the discussion is designed to meet you where you are.
Refreshments, printed excerpts, and note-taking materials provided.
