Janus: The anatomy of a defence tech funding round
A legal and VC deep dive with Mishcon de Reya.
Following our previous Pathfinder session, Navigating the legal landscape for defence startups, Mishcon de Reya returns with a deeper, more forensic exploration of what a funding round really looks like for defence and dual‑use companies - this time lifting the bonnet on the legal mechanics, VC expectations and execution risks that can make or break a raise.
This session goes beyond surface‑level fundraising advice to examine the life cycle of defence tech from a legal and investor perspective: how value is created, protected, scrutinised and ultimately funded.
Mishcon de Reya brings strong credibility at the intersection of venture capital, complex regulation and national‑security‑sensitive technology. Toby McCrindle and Phil Robinson advise:
High‑growth technology companies scaling at speed
VC funds and strategic investors deploying capital into regulated sectors
Defence, aerospace and dual‑use businesses navigating export control, IP and commercial risk
Their strength lies in understanding how investors think, while also knowing where defence companies most often stumble - particularly when transitioning from technical excellence to commercial and investable businesses.
This session is designed for:
Defence and dual‑use founders preparing for their first institutional funding round
CEOs, CTOs and COOs scaling quickly and signing commercial contracts early
Companies at TRL 4–7 moving from R&D into revenue
Founders engaging with VCs, strategic investors or corporate venture arms
Startups unsure whether their IP, contracts or structure will survive diligence
Operators who want to raise capital without losing control or future optionality
If you are coming to market, scaling fast, or already talking to investors - this session is for you.
