This workshop #17 in a series of 30+ weekly sessions.

Agenda:

What we’ll cover:

  1. Why the building address isn’t enough. Hotels outside a flood, hurricane or wildfire zone lose bookings too. Modelling business interruption means looking beyond the property itself to the wider affected area.

  2. Losses without damage. Resorts, museums, attractions and whole towns left physically untouched can still lose up to 90% of their business for weeks or even months after nearby floods, storms and wildfires.

  3. Examples of business losses - detailed review:

    • Rhodes wildfires, Greece (July 2023): €25M loss for a single tour operator, TUI Group

    • Maui wildfires, USA (Aug 2023): $53M loss for Marriott Vacations

    • Valencia floods, Spain (Oct 2024): €4B in tourism losses, according to the regional tourism minister

    • Heathrow Airport shutdown, UK (March 2025): 18 hours closed, costing the airline industry £60M

    • Cat 5 Hurricane Melissa, Jamaica (Oct 2025): a US$10M loss for Hyatt

  4. From benchmarks to expected loss modeling. We’ll explain how loss data from non-climate disruptions can be used in expected loss calculations.

Format: a one-hour interactive online workshop with dynamic discussions and answers to your questions. Microphones on, cameras on, and NO recordings. Don’t miss the opportunity to ask questions and discuss them with your peers!

Workshop materials, slides, and video tutorials are already available in the shared Drive for participants.

You can book sessions individually.
