Writing Home: In Conversation with Pat McArt, Jayne Marshall and Nilo Núñez

​Home means something different to everyone. It can be somewhere you choose to adopt, a place you dedicate your working life to, or somewhere you are forced to leave.

​Join three writers who cover all three of those definitions for an evening of conversation and armchair travel!

​Pat McArt is known for his role as editor of the Derry Journal, a position he held from 1981 until 2006. His 25 years with the paper coincided with some of the most difficult years of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Under his leadership, the paper maintained a reputation for fairness, accuracy, and courage in reporting. In 2023 he published his memoir, War, Peace and the Derry Journal to wide acclaim. Earlier this year Pat was honoured by Atlantic Technological University with the first ever Alumni Award recognising his contributions to journalism, education, and public service.

​​​​Jayne Marshall is a writer and editor from the UK and now living in Madrid. Her first book A Line Drawn or Printed: Six Routes Through Madrid was recently published by Modern Odyssey Books. She is also Associate Editor of The Madrid Review

​Nilo Núñez is a writer and musician. He was born in Castro's Cuba, where English-language rock music was considered a decadent symbol of capitalism. Miraculously, however, on his tenth birthday, Nilo managed to catch an original version of The Beatles song "Birthday" on the airwaves. The sound inspired him to form the rock band Rhodas. However, a run-in with the police would see Nilo starting out from scratch, thousands of miles from home. His book about the band A través de los obstacúlos, was published by Círculo Rojo in Spanish in 2018. His story was featured on the BBC World Service programme, Outlook.
