The Art of Pakhawaj
Experience the rare and powerful sound, repertoire and traditions of the pakhawaj in this intimate workshop and performance with acclaimed artist Nikhil Ghorpadkar.
The pakhawaj holds an important place within the Dhrupad-Dhamar tradition and has fascinating rhythmic connections with Kathak and tabla. Through conversation, demonstration and participation, Nikhil will introduce the history and repertoire of the instrument, explore its relationship with these traditions, and share selected compositions and padhant for participants to learn.
The session will also include a short pakhawaj solo presentation, accompanied by Kaviraj Singh on santoor, followed by time for questions and informal discussion.
Nikhil Ghorpadkar is a pakhawaj artist from Pune who carries forward his family's Panse Gharana tradition, alongside training in the Kudau Singh Gharana. An ICCR-empanelled and All India Radio graded artist, he has performed extensively across India, the UK and Europe as both a soloist and accompanist to Dhrupad-Dhamar, instrumental music and dance.
This is a rare opportunity to experience the formidable sound and resonance of the pakhawaj up close, while gaining a deeper understanding of its place within North Indian classical music and dance.
