The Secret Ingredient Writer's Salon: Scent
Five senses. Five sessions. One story only you can tell.
Week 2 of our sensory journey explores the sense of smell—how a single scent can return us to a person, place, or moment.
The Secret Ingredient Writer’s Salon is for essayists and memoirists ready to let themselves back into their own story.
This session may be attended on its own or as part of the five-week salon.
SESSION 2: SMELL
Smell is the sense most directly connected to memory. It can bypass language entirely, which is precisely why writing through scent can be so powerful.
For me, it’s catching the whiff of dryer sheets escaping from the vents of the larger apartment buildings in my neighborhood. In an instant, I’m back in 1982, walking home from grammar school in Bensonhurst.
In this session, we’ll use smell as a portal—the way a single aroma can bring an entire scene or story rushing back to life.
