The More-Than-Human City

​Drop into a slow experience of the living world after a busy Climate Week. Can we commune with nature in one of the most chaotic parks in New York? Let's find out. (Yes.)

​Join Dear Crisis and Earthling for a field trip to look closely at what's blooming, buzzing, fruiting, foraging, and otherwise alive in Tompkins Square Park and the community gardens of the East Village.

​Through guided exploration and discussion, we'll practice identifying our nonhuman neighbors and ask: How does a plant keep time and why do some bloom so late in summer? Which creatures stick around all year, and who is passing through for the season? What does a pigeon sense that we don’t?

​We'll embrace New York as a more-than-human city—one where New Yorkers, human and nonhuman, live in close connection and interdependence. Seeing the city through this lens not only opens up opportunities for daily wonder, but also sets the stage for climate resilience.

​In other words: let's touch grass.

​WHERE AND WHEN

​We will depart from Caravan of Dreams at 4:30 and walk within a 10-minute radius of the restaurant.

​WHAT TO BRING

​No need to know the names of the plants, own binoculars, or identify as a "nature person.” Just bring your curiosity and some comfortable walking shoes.

​FIELD NOTEBOOKS

​Notebooks are not necessary but encouraged! You can buy an Earthling field notebook with your ticket to record your observations from the event and your future explorations. We'll also have some available for sale at the event.
