Krill Baby Krill: Piloting an Activist Investment Trust for the Antarctic
What if an environmental campaign could simultaneously shrink the market for an extractive industry and accelerate investment in its alternatives?
Krill sits at the foundation of the Antarctic food web, but this critical ecosystem is being pushed beyond its limits.
Industrial vessels are harvesting krill at record scale. Competing with whales, penguins and seals for their essential food source, this industry is siphoning the foundation of the Antarctic ecosystem into non-essential commercial products like omega-3 supplements—even as viable krill-free alternatives exist.
Overstories and Collective Capital Lab are developing a new campaign model designed to challenge the social and commercial license of this extractive industry while helping accelerate the market for its alternatives.
At its core: an Activist Investment Trust focused on the Antarctic krill issue: pairing an independent campaign against industrial fishing with aligned investment in krill-free replacement technologies.
This is an invitation to a participatory working session to cross-pollinate expertise, pressure-test an emerging idea and help shape a new approach to moving capital against extraction and towards regeneration.
