Tech Leaders Fine Dining Series: An Omakase for Engineering Leaders Planning 2027
Headcount or tokens? An omakase for engineering leaders planning 2027.
Budget season is here, and the same question keeps landing on every engineering leader's desk: how much of next year goes to people, and how much goes to AI spend? Plenty of teams went from celebrating usage charts to setting hard caps in a single quarter. Nobody has a clean answer yet, and the people we've hosted this fall don't agree on one.
A small group at an omakase counter to compare notes, off the record:
How are you splitting 2027 budget between headcount and AI spend, and who signed off?
What are you measuring to prove the tokens are worth it, when most metrics get gamed?
If code is cheap, where did the cost go: review, validation, or the people who own what ships?
