CTO Roundtable: Software factories and what they do to the organisation
This is a small, invitation-only dinner for CTOs and senior engineering leaders.
Most companies have already rolled out AI coding assistants. What is less clear is whether that has meaningfully changed how software gets delivered.
That is what we want to discuss.
The conversation will focus on what comes after individual developer productivity: software factories, where AI takes on a much larger part of the production work, and what that starts to change across engineering and the wider organisation.
We are keeping the group deliberately small, with around 12 people. There will be no presentations, no slides and no sales pitches. Everyone in the room will be responsible for running or leading an engineering organisation, and the discussion will stay in the room under the Chatham House Rule.
What we’ll discuss
Beyond development. If AI takes on more of the engineering work, what changes for product, QA, architecture, security and operations?
The role of engineers. Where do review, judgement, validation and technical trade-offs sit? How do the roles of senior and junior engineers change?
Greenfield vs. brownfield. Where does this work today, how do you approach existing systems, and when does a rewrite actually make sense?
AI education. What do developers, product teams and the rest of the organisation need to learn, and in what order?
How to measure progress. Throughput, lead time, cost, team size or something else entirely. What is useful to measure, and what can you realistically communicate to the board?
