Coffee, carbon removal, and co-benefits: Transforming coffee waste into biochar to help the coffee industry face climate risk.
Panel title:
Coffee, carbon removal, and co-benefits: How transforming coffee waste into biochar can help the coffee industry face its massive climate risk.
What it is about:
This panel features a group of interdisciplinary Stanford graduate students sharing recent research on the scale-up of biochar in coffee supply chains as a climate and soil health solution. The panel will explore how coffee waste can be converted into biochar–a simple yet powerful agricultural tool that can help the world meet climate goals, while improving soil fertility.
The discussion will be moderated by David Griswold, a former Specialty Coffee Association Sustainability Award winner, who is introducing carbon market opportunities to the specialty coffee industry. Devorah Freudiger, Director of Coffee Culture at Equator Coffee, will bring a roaster-retailer perspective. The event's venue host is Equator Coffee, a pioneering, women-owned roaster and the first California coffee roaster certified as a Benefit Corporation.
What you'll learn:
The panel will present research on how biochar can be integrated into coffee supply chains and why it matters for producers, roasters, and consumers. The panel will demystify carbon removal and discuss the unique role the coffee sector can play in scaling climate solutions.
Who should attend:
This session is perfect for roasters, coffee and climate enthusiasts, and impact investors interested in turning agricultural waste into climate action!
