BioFi Deep Dive - Exploring the BFF Landscape in Europe with Leon Seefeld
Across Europe, an increasingly diverse ecosystem of actors is exploring different versions of Bioregional Financing Facilities. From catchment trusts and place-based investment funds to bioregional basic incomes and bioregional stewardship credits, many initiatives are converging on the question of: what financial infrastructure is needed to build resilience in face of what is coming at us?
Since publishing Bioregional Financing Facilities: Reimagining Finance to Regenerate our Planet, Leon has worked with various practitioners across Europe through Dark Matter Labs and Bioregional Weaving Labs to:
a) co-develop real manifestations of BFFs and
b) to keep pushing on the thought leadership front, exploring topics such as governance, risk & value, metrics, and project pipelines.
Drawing on work with pioneering initiatives across the continent, he has developed a unique perspective on how this field is evolving, where different approaches converge and diverge, and what capabilities will be needed for the next phase of development.
On this call, we will hear from Leon on where he sees the European BFF landscape is at and where it might be headed in the next few years. He will highlight inspiring examples, discuss emerging patterns, reflect on key challenges, and explore what questions are particularly alive at the moment.
Leon will also share exciting news about the launch of two initiatives that aim to significantly boost the BFF landscape in Europe: the RZ Studio and the European Headwaters Facility.
About Leon Seefeld
Leon Seefeld is the Co-Lead of Dark Matter Capital Systems and bioregional finance advisor to the Bioregional Weaving Labs, working on developing Bioregional Financing Facilities as next-generation financial institutions for resilient, place-based economies. His work focuses on redesigning finance to recognise systemic value, coordinate multiple forms of capital, and build institutional capacity for long-term stewardship of Bioregional Health. In 2024, Leon and Samantha, together with a range of other collaborators, published the book Bioregional Financing Facilities: Reimagining Finance to Regenerate Our Planet.
