More than a decade after the reproducibility crisis gained attention, reproducibility remains a major challenge in modern research, with many experiments still failing toreplicate. Lab automation improves consistency and throughput but is often delivered through rigid, high-cost systems with long-term vendor dependence, makingadaptation difficult. As a result, many labs still rely heavily on manual workflows. At the same time, science is evolving faster than these systems can adapt, with AI andgrowing demand for high-quality data accelerating change in fast-moving research environments. This panel explores DIY lab automation as an alternative, focusing on best practices for enabling lab teams to build and reconfigure flexible, modular systems that evolve withscientific needs.
